Trailblazing Irish band Horslips was launched professionally thirty years this month. The famous five were the first band to meld rock n' roll with Irish music, helping to spawn the hitherto unknown genre that became Celtic Rock.

Pre 1972, the Irish music scene was dominated by the showbands, but the expectations of a more sophisticated audience that was increasingly influenced by foreign newspapers and television began to change.

Johnny Fean and his band could afford to experiment, and their radical new brand of music was the perfect alternative for a changing Irish society that was, for the first time, being exposed to live rock acts from abroad.
